Nearly 30 years ago as a spiritual director-in-training and new spiritual director, I longed to witness the practice more broadly than just through the good work of my own spiritual director. Imagining other directors might have similar longings, I wrote a book which aimed to “show” spiritual direction, through narratives and reflections on actual conversations with directees. In our time together I will reflect on what I experience in spiritual direction, fifteen years after that book was published. This will be a conversation among spiritual directors and directees about our “inside” experience of this holy art of listening for God with another person.
Susan S. Phillips, Ph.D., is a spiritual director and sociologist, a member of the Core Doctoral Faculty of the Graduate Theological Union, and for many years was the Executive Director of New College Berkeley where she continues to direct the spiritual formation ministries. She has written two books which consider the art of spiritual direction: Candlelight: Illuminating the Art of Spiritual Direction (Morehouse, 1998) and The Cultivated Life: From Ceaseless Striving to Receiving Joy (IVP, 2015). In addition to the joy of being a spiritual director, Susan is grateful for the joys of being a wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and pilgrim.
